Travel Diary: Kool KL

23/11/2014
10 October - Bangkok to Kuala Lumpur
What a long night!   Alarm goes off at 2.30am, taxi pick up at 3am to the airport and boarding at 6am.  We were on a fairly small Malaysian Airlines plane, maybe 100 seats and it was empty!  Maybe 15 people, with no one behind us at all and we were sat next to the wing.  Not sure if it's just quiet or everyone has lost faith in Malaysian airlines?  We arrived in KL International Airport in under 2 hours and got the KL express train to Sentral (takes 28 minutes to the city centre costing 35R each) and then a taxi from the 'budget taxi rank' for 13 ringgit (£2.50) to the hotel.  The driver then took us to the wrong part of town saying we gave him the wrong address then drove a little further to Hotel Maison Boutique which is a cool hotel with different themed rooms.  We had pre booked a standard none-themed room for £36 a night.  When we arrived they gave us a free upgrade to a Michael Jackson room!  Hee Hee!

I had a hours nap before heading out to find the Monorail (I can't help but sing the song out of The Simpsons episode) as we are a fair way from the KLCC (Kuala Lumpur City Centre).  The hotel is located in a strange position down some quiet streets so it's about a 10 minute walk to the monorail.  They literally stuff you on the train it's so full.  We had to stand and Shaun had a wobble and slow-mo nearly sat on a man's lap! I thought it was absolutely hilarious ... must be his meds!  A few short stops and changing line we were at KLCC and literally right under the Petronas Towers.  We had a walk around the shopping mall and just so happens to be a booth selling tickets for the Moto GP which is in Sepang the day before our flight leaves for Sydney.  Shaun couldn't believe the coincidence and we ended up booking it for when we come back to KL on 26th.  Shaun is sooooooo excited, but after he has been ill he needed some cheering up!  We wanted to go up the Petronas Towers but there is a 2 day waiting list or you can queue up at 7am in the morning for the chance of getting a ticket that day, we opted for booking in on Sunday.

In the evening we went out for some street food on Jalan Alor.  Little did we know we have already been here when we came on our first travels in 2008, it still looked the same 6 years later!  We had some really yummy food sat amongst the locals watching the weird and wonderful 'entertainment'.  I say this loosely as it's really just people walking up and down the street blaring music out of a boom box trying to sing along!
11th October - Kuala Lumpur
Shaun's phone turned off last night so we missed our alarm and breakfast.  We ended up waking at 10.30 and decided to book 2 more nights here.  They gave us the superior room rate so that we could stay in our deluxe theme room for 380R (£35 a night).  A quick change and we got the free shuttle bus from the hotel to the Menara KL Tower (the sky tower).  Whilst there we booked to have lunch in Atmosphere 360 AKA the revolving restaurant!  Each meal is booked into time slots so we were booked 1.30 to 3pm.  We took the elevator which zooms rapidly up the tower popping your ears and sitting at 282 meters (the building in total is 421 meters)!  There is a huge buffet lunch and the food was so yummy.  Shaun didn't have 4 plates of food at all!!  Lunch cost 80R each which is £15 which I think is a bargain with a hazy view of the city!  You can pay an extra 25R to be next to the window but everyone is up walking around for photos anyway.  We both felt underdressed in scruffy shorts and t-shirt when there were lots of girls dressed to the nines for a birthday party!
After an hour and a half you are kicked out and go down to the observation deck for more photos.
Feeling very stuffed we rolled down the hill and got the monorail back to the hotel.
By the evening we still were so stuffed from lunch Shaun ordered some room service and we got a an early night.
12 October - Kuala Lumpur
Today we went for a tour around the Petronas towers.  About 20 of us all squeezed into the lift and they whizz you up to the Skybridge connecting the two buildings.  It is soooooo high up, 170 meters above the pavement!  And the bridge isn't even fixed to the buildings so they have room to sway in the wind!  Pretty scary!  Back in the lift and they took us up to the top observation deck on level 86!!  The views from up here are insane, you can see well beyond the city.
We had another chilled evening as our hotel is too far from any restaurants or bars.  We are off to Bali tomorrow!!! A la perchoine Jodie and Shaun x
