Travel Diary : Nha Trang, Vietnam

08/11/2010
Hi everyone, not really a lot to report from the last few days in Nha Trang. As it’s a beach side resort there’s not much to do in the rainy season!! Glad to see that some people have remembered we’re gone and left us messages! It’s starting to kick in now that we’re going to be away for a long time! 8 October Today we have just wondered around in the rain really!! I can imagine that the beach would be great in the sunshine and there are 9 little islands to visit, cheap diving and all those good things to be enjoyed in the sunshine. We have been informed that today is the start of a 2 day storm and then we will be able sunbathe; I’m praying!! Tonight around town was pretty dead as there was no football on so me and Shaun just had a session on our own in the ghost town! P.S. by the way it’s a huge mozzie bite front and centre of my forehead not massive spot!! 9 October There was actually no rain all day!! It’s still very overcast so still no sunbathing unfortunately! Instead we explored the resort - there really isn’t much else then beach, bars and restaurants. Shaun got his haircut today (you are going to crack up at the picture!!). We went to what looked like the best looking hairdressers in town and Shaun explained what he wanted so one of the girls just picked up the clippers and went for it, then a second woman stepped in to take over. I thought she was just about finished and then she made a massive cut down the side of his head, I thought it was a mistake until she did it the other side and cut it out like a Lego man!! By this point I was really trying to hold in my laughter as Shaun looked seriously worried. She then got out the razor and bicced off half the bottom of his hair!! After we complained, a third woman had a go but they just couldn’t understand what was wrong!! Shaun begrudgingly gave them $5 and left. We tried to figure out if and how it was fixable and decided to go to the hairdressers next door to our hotel. They were in stitches when they saw it! Luckily the woman had half a clue what she was doing and managed to sort the bottom half out but then started hacking off the top which was actually fine. After about 30 minutes Shaun came out looking like a US marine!!! We have booked to go to a mud bath tomorrow though so hopefully have more to report! 10 October After lunch we were picked up and taken to the mud bath. It wasn’t really what we were expecting, we were told to sit in a two person bath tub whilst they filled it with warm brown water! Ewwwww! The mud baths that I remember is where you slather sloppy clay onto you and wait for it to dry! Anyway, we had to sit here for at least 20 minutes for the mineral health benefits (what these can be I have no idea!). Looking like monsters from the swamp we made our way to the salty hot showers to wash off. We were then led over to our own hot spring. Not a natural hot spring unfortunately just a hot tub looking bath filled with salty BOILING hot water where we were supposed to swelter for a while. After about 5 minutes we were at about fainting point so heaved ourselves out and went to the man-made waterfall! We were now dying for a nice cool dip so jumped into the swimming pool but it’s 38°C! After attempting some swimming to get our first bit of exercise since we arrived we got back up to near fainting hot! Then a God send it started to rain to cool us down. Then even better we spotted a sign for a Cool Mineral Pool, yay!! We quickly ran over and jumped into the FREEZING water!! We were told that we could leave at any time, but to our huge annoyance the next bus back wasn’t for 2 hours!! Very annoyed we had to go back into the complex! In the evening we went back to the same restaurant as the previous night. As usual they had all sorts of strange things on the menu like snake and tortoise ... then I spotted a couple of turtles in a dirty tank in the corner, I was mortified. I really wanted to buy them just to set them free!! Poor things! 11 October Another chilled out day; we read our new books (we’re already one down each) and took a stroll across the beach. It’s probably about 5 miles long in total with really course sand and massive waves!! Tomorrow we are going to head to Mui Ne by bus, another beach side fishing village. Yesterday we heard on the news that Ho Chi Minh City had had a flood tide - that was going to be our next destination! Lots of love Jo & Shaun xxx
